Potatoes and sweet potatoes are botanically UNRELATED.
Potatoes and sweet potatoes ARE botanically unrelated. While potatoes are in the Solanacea family and thus, related to the nightshade plants, sweet potatoes come from the Convolvulaceae family. People sensitive to night shade plants and solanine, can thus usually tolerate sweet po-tatoes but NOT “regular” potatoes.
Bananas have an even higher glycemic index than baked sweet potatoes OR baked “regular” potatoes.
Bananas actually have a lower glycemic index AND glycemic load than either baked sweet po-tatoes or baked regular potatoes. For more information about how fruit can help PREVENT diabetes, please check out this post.
The different manners of preparation of potatoes and what foods are eaten with potatoes do not much change the food’s effect on the body.
This is one big limitation of the potato study. The manner in which potatoes are prepared and what they are eaten with, definitely changes things like glycemic index as well as nutrient digestion and assimilation!
